Sunrise and Sunset in Ottawa

Here is an interesting tool to tuck into your web browser Favourites menu for the garden season. Select the year, month, and location, and it tells you when the sun rises, sets, how long the day is, and how high the sun will reach in the sky.

Garden Song

More than a month has passed since the last posting. We are enjoying the preserves made in the autumn, and maybe some frozen produce from our hard work in the garden.

The snow is on the ground. It is cold outside. The chill is in the air. To warm you up, here is a song, sung by folk legend Pete Seeger, a warm reminder of our hobby and passion which unites us with the soil.

(some good gardening tips in there, too!)

End of season clean up - reminder

Hi fellow gardeners,
Just to remind you that you must clear your annual plot(s) from all debris, sticks, posts, cages etc. by Oct 31, as per our agreement with you at the beginning of the season so that we can plough the gardens early in November. Plots with items remaining on them will be considered abandoned by the member.
Please ensure that all green residues are pulled and you can leave them on your plot if you cut them into small pieces. so that you don't have to carry them to compost bins. they will enrich your soil next season.
As for Corn and Sunflower stocks, they must be cut into small pieces (2 to 4 inches) and be left on your own plot as the can not be decomposed easily in our large compost bins. It is preferable if you dig them into your plot soil as well now.
Thank you for your cooperation and until next season, please read our newsletter next spring that will be mailed to you with your renewal application form. It will contain, as always, important information.

NAGA Terms and Conditions, Items 7 and 8: Cut and till your cornstalks in autumn.

The "Terms and Conditions of License" that each gardener agrees to and signs in the spring time clearly lays out the policy on cornstalks.

Terms and Conditions Item #7: "Non-plant refuse is to be placed in garbage receptacles. Compost bins are provided for plant refuse, EXCEPT CORN STALKS." An inconsiderate gardener has decided to dump their long, uncut, cornstalks next to one of the compost bins in the western end of the garden. Picture 1, taken today, shows the evidence of this deed.

Picture 1

Terms and Conditions, Item #8: "DO NOT PLACE IN THE GARBAGE OR IN THE COMPOST BINS." See Picture 2, left, on the correct way to take care of your cornstalks.

Picture 2

These two Terms and Conditions (7 & 8) exist so that compost can be made in the compost bins. As uncut cornstalks do not break down quickly enough in compost, they hinder the production of compost. Therefore, these rules are not there for the sake of having rules, they are there for the benefit of all gardeners!

What this inconsiderate gardener has done is to break two important terms of their contract, AND now other garden volunteers will have to deal with this mess.

Gardeners are reminded that their leases can be terminated by the Board for breaking the Terms and Conditions of License. (Item #15: All terms and conditions of the license will be strictly enforced. This permit may be withdrawn by the Association at any time or not renewed should the member fail to use the garden plot in a good and proper manner, be guilty of improper conduct or interfere with other member’s garden plots.)

The History of the Nepean Allotment Gardens from 1991 to 2002, by Ian A. Reid

If you are at all curious in the history of the NAGA Gardens, from it's inception in 1991, we invite you to read the three-part document that long term NAGA member and gardener Ian Reid, has written. This is a 42 page long history for which NAGA members owe a great debt of gratitude to Ian for doing so much work in preserving our history, and for allowing us to publish this work online.

The History of the Nepean Allotment Gardens: From its inception in 1991 through 2002 is currently found on the
main page of the NAGA website in three separate documents. The first document includes a Table of Contents.

Free organic compost for your plot - get it now!

As per the previous compost story, we worked hard on cleaning up the top of one of the 2 main compost bins behind the tool shed. However, the organic compost in the bottom of it is a great source to enrich your plots soil, all annuals and perennials.
Mr Bill Nye is asking you all to help yourself with it in order to clear this bin for this year's green residues.
If you would like to help Bill during the weekday, you may contact him directly by calling him at: 613-723-0320

Local Gardening Research - Growing Sweetpotatoes in Ottawa

Ian Reid, a well respected and long time NAGA member, has written a thorough and wholly fantastic description of how to grow sweetpotatoes (or sweet potatoes), which is a tropical plant, in Ottawa, here in the temperate zone. He has kindly made this available to the world via our
NAGA website, on the Gardening Tips page. The file is called "My Second Year Growing Organic Sweetpotatoes, by Ian A. Reid".

If you are at all interested in learning about growing this delicious and healthy vegetable here in the more northerly latitudes, you must give Ian's article a read.

Thank you to Ian for sharing this research with our fellow gardeners.

Your end of season compost

Please take note that today, with the help of Bill, Benson and I, cleared up all the tops of the southern big compost bin (see where Bill and Benson are standing on top of).

<--North   South-->

The pile that you see is very good compost that we would like you to help yourself with in the next 2 weeks in order to empty it completely so that we can refill it with fresh plants residues from all over the smaller compost bins.

Should you have to bring in new green material to throw away, please throw it on the very top of the already filled north bin until this one is completely emptied,

Fall Compost organising - 7 Sept 2013

Hi to all gardeners,
Graciously donating his time and efforts, our Bill Nye took the initiative to repile one of the big compost bins behind the sheds, but he needs some helpers:
If you wish to help, please show up at 9:30 am on this coming Saturday, Sep 7, 2013 near the sheds. We have enough tools to use in order to reorganize that big pile of compost.
Our purpose is to empty one of the 2 bins in order to make it available to store this year's stocks in it.

Weed Gardens - the big "no no"!

Here, in the photo below, is an example of a plot that, sadly, got a member's plot lease cancelled. It is totally out of control. Weeds are several feet high. More than one member of the Board has tried in vain to contact the lease holder by email or phone for several weeks. This highlights why it is important to notify the Board of extended absences, and to provide good contact information. Meanwhile, the problem has gotten worse to the annoyance of plot neighbors who are in control of their plots. We hope to identify a new lease holder for the plot and get it under control as soon as possible.

Headlands: what are they, and what are your responsibilities?

Recent plot inspections revealed an ongoing problem in the NAGA garden. Many plot keepers do not keep their headlands clear of debris, or grass, or weeds. Some people have had fencing falling into the headlands, or have placed mulch on them, or they have stored compost there, occasionally tools end up there, or they are putting rocks from their plot on them. This can result in the gardener getting a letter or warning from the Board of Directors regarding their headlands. What are headlands?

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary:
Headland: unplowed land at the ends of furrows or near a fence.

In the NAGA garden the headlands include a strip of ground about 2 to 3 feet wide extending from the edge of your plot outside boundary. The headlands, for a variety of plot positions, are shown in the diagram below. People with corner plots (A, C, D, F) have almost double the amount of headlands to keep clean than people with 'edge' plots (B and E).

CLICK PICTURE TO ENLARGE

Your responsibility as a NAGA gardener is to maintain the headlands next to your plot by clearing or cutting tall weeds, tall grass, and not having ANY foreign material there including: tools, mulch, compost, rocks, and fencing.

Help wanted to prepare new planters!

Hi to all NAGA gardeners,
As part of our commitment to expand west on the section between our main site and the fire station, we received a grant from the City of Ottawa to build new wooden planters.
A lot of the material from last year is still usable, therefore we went ahead and bought enough cedar logs 6X6 enough to build 10 more planters for next season.
Lee Coates, our hard working NAGA Director, has taken onto his shoulder this baby project last year and got a lot of experience putting things together.
This year, he would need some help to prepare the wooden logs: measuring, cutting, and organizing them by order.
However, he works on a retired schedule: 9 am to 12pm, or 1 pm to 3 pm.
If you are available and willing to help him, even if it is a one or two time only, please contact him directly. Email nagagardens @ gmail com for his contact info.
We are looking to prepare at least one or two planters this Friday (12th) and or Monday (15th) in order to maximize the use of some students who are coming over on Monday afternoon to help around the gardens. We plan to use their help to stack up the cedar logs and to fill each planter with sand and soil as we build it up.
Please show Lee some appreciation for the hard work he does and give him a hand or two.
Thanks

Plant a Row Grow a Row 2013

Hello Gardeners,
How are your gardens growing? At least we haven't had to water much until lately!

As you may remember, the Nepean Allotment Garden Association, is participating in Plant a Row, Grow a Row, with food donated going to the Ottawa Food Bank partner, The Debra Dynes Family House. We will be picking up donations every Tuesday morning around 10AM, starting this coming Tuesday, July 9. Please drop your donation off as close to Tuesday morning as possible. There will be a bin in the tool shed for your donation. If you are donating something delicate like lettuce, consider putting it in a bag, or putting the root end in a small container of water to keep it from wilting.

I know it is early in the season and we may not have lots in our gardens, but there are over 150 of us in the garden. If you have one extra lettuce, or zucchini, or handful of herbs, please consider making a donation. If everyone gives a little bit, it adds up to a whole lot.

If you have any questions or concerns about Plant a Row Grow a Row, the Ottawa Food Bank, or The Debra Dynes Family House, please check out these links.

Healthy soil is the foundation of agricultural production. This workshop will investigate the physical, chemical, and biological aspects of soil composition. We will look at the roles of various minerals and nutrients, soil microlife, and the interactions that make soil nutrients available to plants. A range of integrated strategies will be offered to increase soil fertility, from cover cropping, crop rotation and tillage practices, to the balanced application of soil amendments, compost and manure. ‘Don’t separate yourself from the soil!’

Workshop presenter, Norbert Weiler’s family has farmed the same land in Germany for 250 years. His Amish Mennonite background gives him a practical approach to farming, with wisdom handed down over generations. Norbert has been farming in Canada for 40 years, including livestock and plant crops. In addition to his family heritage, he continues to learn and draw on many methods including organics, biodynamics, permaculture and others, to offer a holistic understanding of working with soil in agriculture.

Corn gluten - organic and good for inhibiting weed growth!

Our Board member, Jayne Huntley, would like to share this with you all.

Types of weeds affected:
  • crabgrass (Digitaria ischaemum)
  • dandelions (Taraxacum officinale)
  • reduces the germination rate for curly dock, knotweed, lambs quarters, pigweed, and plantain.
Use corn gluten meal for:
  • lawns
  • flowerbeds
  • bulb beds
  • vegetable gardens
A 20 kg bag does one application for 4500 square feet so should do at least 2 years+ in a 20x30 garden. You need to apply every 6 weeks or so (about 3 times a season). It in stops seeds from germinating for up to 6 weeks so you should use it after your plants are up or where you are going to put already sprouted plants such as peppers and tomatoes. At a local garden centre it was $40, but they also had it at Costco I think, likely for less.

Gardening Calendar - especially for new gardeners

If you are relatively new to gardening a relatively large garden, such as our annual plots (600 square feet), then the NAGA gardening calendar may help guide you and keep you on track. The calendar was created by our current NAGA Secretary, Helene Labbe. A big thanks to Helene for such a thorough and neat job.

While the general advice offered applies to any food garden (in Ottawa), the calendar is mostly relevant to the Annual Plots, since their productive time is restricted to between the NAGA spring and fall tilling.

The calendar is a 'pdf' document which is located at the top of the Gardening Tips page of the NAGA website.

Here is a direct link to the calendar:

Print it out and stick on your fridge at home!

Happy gardening!

Stones - what to do with them, and what NOT to do with them

Finding stones is inevitable when gardening, particularly in the NAGA garden. You are free to remove stones, but please remember, when working in your garden to NOT put any stones outside of your plot border. Please place them on the large trays which are located by the compost bins throughout the garden.

Stones in your headlands (the border external to your plot) may be run over by the NAGA lawn tractor during grass cutting. The lawn tractor is an expensive asset of the Association which must be operational throughout the entire gardening season. Stone, such as shown below could seriously damage the cutting blades, and fragments of stones could fly out from the machine and injure one of our gardeners. We don't want that!

Here is a photo of stones there were placed in the grass near somebody's garden plot. Please, do not put any stones in the grass!
